Eli overrated or did he jump that hurdle?

Posted on: February 9, 2008 4:41 pm

Eli's put up some big games against my Cowboys so i've always seen his potential. however i've really have never seen the guy just take over a game until this year. i dont know when this happened, but somewhere during the season he started clicking.it certainly didnt click when the Giants had the pats owned during week 17 and choked. For a guy who is now a hero for his playoff preformance, i think he is only average from the stats aspect. i know there are more than stats to deal with. he had 23 Touchdowns and 20 picks this year. nothing extraordinary. a career 73.4 passer rating isnt a braggable achievement either.had it not been for his teams stellar defence and a lucky pass in the superbowl, would eli have gotten any publicity? i hate to do this, but i compare Eli to Rex Grossman. if you look at Grossman's 2006 stats to Eli's 2007 stats they are the same. they rode a great Defense to the super bowl. only Rex choked and Eli played solid. dont get me wrong i'm not saying Rex and Eli are the same talent, but i am saying that neither are superstars. Average QB's can win in the NFL aka Jeff Garcia but IMO eli just doesnt have the tools to become a superstar. however if he keeps manageing the game like he did in the super bowl, he will be pretty decent

Think he jumped the hurdle. I think this is what he needed to step out of the shadows of both Archie and Peyton Manning. Though, he's not a superstar, yet. That I don't think he will accomplish. He's definitely a star. Even though I said that, I still won't draft him high.

Eli overrated or did he jump that hurdle?

have you guys seen his 2007 stats compared to Rex Grossmans of 2006?  its very interesting.

QB Rating- Rex-73.9 Eli-73.9

Yards- Rex-3193 Eli- 3336

TD's/ INT's Rex-23-20 Eli-23-20

Attempts- Complition and %- Rex 225-122 54.2% Eli 529-297 56.1%

Fumbles- Fumbles Lost- Rex 7-5 Eli 13-7

Stats dont reflect leadership, but i dont see him as a top ten caliper QB.  Personally i think the guy got lucky in the Super Bowl.  the Giants are a great team but i dont think he makes them a better team.  what i'm saying here is he cant make a good team great.

Eli overrated or did he jump that hurdle?

Well i see some valid points... and some good ones and some bad ones... Eli Over rated... compared to Rex... all of this "stat" wise is great and dandy... except for one thing as noted you can't put on a stat line leadership. Which Eli has... Composure which Eli has... (people can say he doesn't get "FIRED UP" i call that keeping calm... ) everyone wanted him out of the gate to be the best he could be to win a Super Bowl...  took Peyton how long? Eli half as long as his older brother... and for anyone who says the "Giants are great" don't make me laugh... they were picked to be last with a losing record or 2nd to last with barely a .500 record if that.  We lost Tiki... our DB's were "horrible" we were converting a DE to LB... and Strahan missed all of training camp.  Eli looked like he had to carry this team.  And with Diehl at LT oh man his blind side was the biggest talk in training camp (outside of Tikis mouth) how is he going to be protected... especially when they won't be able to run as well? This was great... underdogs from day one.  Dropped passes left and right, defense was solid due to a great pass rush DB's played well.  Still our DB's were our "weakness" on defense Eli was our weak link on offense.  No blame to the WR's for dropped passes or no body buying into the system or injuries in the DB's nope...  just Eli and our DB's were holding us down they stunk it up...2 games against the Cowboys first game Osi gets hurt weren't buying into the system and another DB's were beat up.  8 TD's... and the game against the Pack next week... 3 passing TD's... thats 11 in 3 games... we gave up 13 in 13 other games... pretty good I'd say so.  Eli once his WR's stopped dropping passes (notice) the playoffs started playing better.  Scratch the Patriots game giving him confidence just they stopped dropping passes.  We dropped almost 3 balls a game.  43 drops this year.  Sad... even if you just take one drop pass a game and put it to a completion that goes to 60 % and who knows how that turns around the game... 43 is an absurd amount... hell even 27 is too much for a year.  Especially for a run first team.  Thats my point.  We'll see Smith will be a bigger part who actually can catch, Boss who has some hands will be a bigger role he will spread it out more... and trust his defense.  He doesn't have to be the 27 TD guy because he will force the ball to much... run first and if there is something there then take it.  If not dink and dunk first down after first down.

Eli overrated or did he jump that hurdle?

Eli is over rated right now remember before the playoffs no one would have put him in the top 10 QB's playing this year

Overrated? Are you kidding me?

Granted, he had some bumps along the road but he showed his mettle when it mattered the most.

He lead them to three straight playoffs wins on the road.

Then, when everyone in the world except Giants fans left them for dead, he lead them down the field for the championship winning drive right after Tom Brady thought he did the same.

In the Super Bowl, against the mighty 18-0 Patriot defense! All they needed to do cement their legacy was to stop Peyton's little brother one last time and they couldn't do it.

RogueK9, would you say he is the same amazing QB that you claim he is if he goes 5-11 next season....hypathetically (i know that the giants will be rated as a top team next year) what if the giants dont repeat the success and never achieve the hype?  i guarentee that fans will be talking about manning being a one hit wonder.

i have no doubt that he is overrated.  the sports world is annointing him as equal to Payton. which he is not IMO.  Grossman was on fire until late in the playoffs.  still he was at the helm.  the super bowl broke him. we found out what we already knew. he was a less talented Trent Dilfer.

Eli Manning jumped the hurdle big time. A Superbowl is not easy to win. I don't know why people are still underestimating him. He has a lot of good qualities and leadership skills like Peyton Manning had. If you want to look at it, then look at it this way comapred to Grossman's 2006 stats all he did different was win the Superbowl, the think Grossman failed to do. Why? Eli was calm and delivered under pressure. Based on this I think he has jumped the hurdle big time.

Eli Manning is definately WAY overated... if the Giants still had Kurt Warner...  Eli woulda been yanked out of the starting job mid season and  Warner would be the MVP of the Super Bowl!!!! and probly even deserving it..........

He DID win the big game......but other than that AMAZING SCRAMBLE....didn't see much that impressed me.  The defense won the big one!!!

Exactly..................... and lets not forget that lucky catch either  !!!!! LOOK AT HIM... JUST LOOK AT HIM DOES HE EVEN LOOK LIKE A REAL QUARTERBACK???
